OKBET CRICKET : Tahlia McGrath proves the selectors right by leading Australia to an Ashes triumph

With a nine-wicket victory against England as the first game of the Ashes, Tahlia McGrath marked her newfound status as the team’s leading allrounder by playing one of the best Twenty20 performances in Australian history.

McGrath made a statement at the Adelaide Oval with 3-26 and an unbeaten 91 off of 49 balls only hours after Australia made the greatest selection choice in history by removing Ellyse Perry.

McGrath’s bowling stint was the game-changer, limiting England to 4-169 when they were poised to score closer than 190.

The South Australian then came in at No. 3 and took charge of the game, contributing to the largest T20 chase in the country’s history.

It was the first occasion in the history of Twenty20 internationals that a female player has scored 75 or more runs and taken three wickets.

McGrath’s player-of-the-series performance against India last year triggered the pressure that ultimately led to Perry’s omission from Australia’s T20 selection, and she maintained her position even after Rachael Haynes’s comeback from injury.

The proof was in the pudding last Thursday night.

McGrath reached her half century off just 28 balls, including 13 fours and a huge six, helping Australia reach their goal with three overs to spare.

She smacked one six over the leg side from Freya Davies and showed skill by cutting late from behind the wicket when afforded width.

Meg Lanning, batting at the top of the order after Beth Mooney was hurt, scored 64 not out in the chase.

With England’s score at 0-81 off 10 overs, Alana King also contributed with a wicket in her first performance by catching Tammy Beaumont out with a catch and delivery.

In contrast, McGrath shone brightest among the evening’s performers.

She bowled both Danni Wyatt (70) and Nat Sciver (32) with yorkers to stop England’s momentum when they were 2-141 in the 17th over.

Amy Jones was the second victim of her next over in just her fourth T20 international.

Perry’s exclusion, on the other hand, came after a week of speculation over her place, but still comes as a major surprise considering her status as one of the game’s best players.

Since the COVID-19 epidemic derailed her recovery from a hamstring injury two years ago, she has fought valiantly to get back to her best with the ball.

When asked about Perry’s spot earlier this week, Australia’s coach Matthew Mott said that the team was looking for middle-order batsmen who could deliver a strike rate of 150.

In the 50-over and Test forms, where Perry is still considered a top player in the world, she will very probably keep her berth in the team.

In this multi-format series, each T20 and ODI is awarded two points, with the lone Test earning four.
